There are many reasons for students opting for used med school books. The main reason obviously is the high price of brand new books.
However, it is not very easy to find good quality used medical books. One can easily find used or what is fashionably called "pre-owned" versions of almost all popular books of fiction or non-fiction.
Why These Books Are Not Easy To Find
One reason is the high cost of the items. People, as a rule, prefer to keep something for which they have spent a large sum. Moreover, practicing medical professionals would want to refer to these books frequently in the future. Medical books are no use and throw trashes like some of the popular fiction books. As a result, only a fraction of brand new medical books comes back for sale as used med school books.
Why Are Medical Books Costly
Medical education is a niche sector in academic publishing. A publisher has to spend a considerable amount of money and time for producing a quality medical book. The authors have to have good reputation in the academic or research level. The publisher in most cases will have to pay a reasonably good amount to the authors.
Production cost too is very high. These are usually very large books with a lot of graphics and pictures involved. Pre-production processes such as pagination, proof reading, and indexing can be complex and hence expensive. The publishers have no other choice than raising the cover price of the book.
The following are some tips to select good quality used med school books.
Where To Find Used Med School Textbooks?
There are two places where one can get old medical textbooks.
The first is the textbook store of the university or the institute. Students who do not want the books in the future offer the books to the store at reasonable prices. However, there will be only a few copies.
The second option is to search on the Internet. One can find some websites that sell pre-owned medical books at competitive prices. These websites accept used books from all around the world. Therefore, they tend to have a better stock than do university stores.
Start Early
As already indicated, used med school books are among the rare species in the used book planet. One has to start at least one month before the start of each semester. Earlier would be better. Most institutions publish details of reference books for each course well in advance. It may not be difficult to find out the books one requires for the next semester.
One can always check the university store or any other used bookstore first. However, unless one starts hunting books very early, one is unlikely to get all the books one wants from the store. The next step is to search on the Internet. A simple search would lead one to websites that offer used medical books.
Use ISBN
Most students search the books based on author name and book name. A better option would be to use the ISBN. It is a unique number assigned to each book. It provides a faster and easier way to spot used med school books.
