Is the sound quality of the iPod Nano poor compared to similar rivals?
Hi all. I hope this doesn't sound too simple a question. I had a 1st gen iPod Nano and was very happy, though back then I was admittedly a 128-bit MP3 person. Last summer I bought an 8GB Philips on sale, hated it, and am buying a new one. I'm currenlty torn between a 4th gen Nano (16GB) and 1st Gen Sony Walkman S740 (16GB). I now use Lossless when I can, but AAC 192 VBR for smaller devices, and from what I understand good quality earphones (usually not the stock) is roughly as important as the device. Is there anything else to consider? I notice many Sony Walkmans (which overtook iPod Nano sales in Japan late last year) come with a variety of sound enchancements incl. digital noise cancellation, premium headphones, clearer audio and bass particularly. But does that really leave the Nano in the dust? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mars. Apple added equalizer settings to the 4th generation Nano, so you can increase/decrease bass or set it for a particular type of music like acoustic or hip-hop. I also like that it has a Sound Check option which adjusts the decibel level of different albums to a consistent volume.
That being said, iPod does not have the highest quality internal amp or equalizer. With a mediocre set of headphones, songs sound noticeably better on a BlackBerry 8900 than a nano 4th generation. With great headphones, I can't tell the difference between the two devices.
My main reason for buying an iPod is because there are so many docking devices that let you play your iPod without using headphones. I use an FM transmitter to run the iPod through the car stereo (my car doesn't have an aux jack for MP3 players); use a stereo dock to play it at work (can't really wear headphones in the office); and use a dock connector cable to run line-level sound through a home stereo system. Just something else to consider ...
